Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles in Dallas–Fort Worth

North Texas sits in one of the most hail-prone parts of the country. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are built to take more of a beating than standard shingles, and many Texas insurers offer premium discounts for them. CGJ Roofing & Construction installs Class 4 roofs to manufacturer specs and will help you decide whether the upgrade makes sense for your home.

The Rating

What "Class 4" Means

Impact-resistant shingles are rated under the UL 2218 test. In the lab, steel balls of increasing size are dropped onto the shingle. Class 4 is the highest rating: the shingle withstood a 2-inch steel ball without cracking through.

That doesn't make a roof hail-proof. Very large hail can still damage any roof. But Class 4 shingles are built to resist the cracking and fracturing that standard shingles are more prone to.

FAQ

Class 4 Shingles FAQ

Are Class 4 shingles hail-proof?

No roof is hail-proof. Class 4 shingles passed the highest impact rating in the UL 2218 test and resist hail damage better than standard shingles, but very large hail can still cause damage.

Will I get an insurance discount?

Many Texas insurers offer premium discounts for Class 4 impact-resistant roofs. The amount and requirements vary, so ask your insurance agent before you decide.

Do Class 4 shingles look different?

Not really. They come in architectural styles and colors that look like standard shingles.
