Step by Step

How a Roof Insurance Claim Works in Texas

01

Free roof inspection

Before you file, find out whether there's storm damage at all. We inspect and photograph your roof at no cost.

02

You file the claim

If there's damage, you contact your insurer and open a claim. You'll get a claim number and an assigned adjuster.

03

Adjuster inspection

The adjuster inspects your roof. We can be there so the damage we documented is seen firsthand.

04

Review the decision

If approved, your insurer sends a scope of loss. We'll go over it with you so you understand what it includes.

05

Repair or replacement

Installed to manufacturer specs, with daily clean-up and a magnetic nail sweep.

06

Final paperwork

Many policies release part of the payment after the work is done. We provide the completion documents your insurer asks for.

Know the Terms

Understanding Your Insurance Terms

Check your own policy or ask your agent which of these apply to you.

Deductible

The amount you pay toward the claim. Many Texas policies use a percentage deductible for wind and hail, based on your home's insured value.

RCV (Replacement Cost Value)

Coverage that pays to replace damaged materials with new ones, often in two payments.

ACV (Actual Cash Value)

Coverage that subtracts depreciation for the roof's age, so the payout may be lower.

Recoverable depreciation

On many RCV policies, money held back until the work is done.

Scope of loss

The insurer's itemized list of covered damage and prices.

Reporting deadlines

Policies set time limits for reporting damage. Report promptly after a storm.

Protect Yourself

Protect Yourself From Storm Chasers

After a big hailstorm, out-of-town crews often go door to door. Be cautious if a roofer:

  • Offers to cover or waive your deductible
  • Asks you to sign a contract on the spot, before an inspection or claim decision
  • Wants a large payment up front
  • Can't give you a local phone number or references
  • Pressures you to decide right away

FAQ

Insurance Claim FAQ

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?

Many homeowners get a free inspection first to confirm there's real storm damage before filing. Policies have reporting deadlines, so don't wait long. Check your policy for the details.

Will you meet my insurance adjuster?

Yes. We can meet your adjuster at your property and point out the damage we documented.

Can you pay my deductible?

No. Texas law prohibits roofing contractors from waiving, paying or rebating a homeowner's insurance deductible.

What if my claim is denied?

We'll review the decision with you and tell you honestly what we see. Options may include asking your insurer about a re-inspection or talking with your agent. We can't negotiate the claim for you; that's reserved for you or a licensed public adjuster.

Does my policy cover an old roof?

Coverage depends on your policy. Some pay to replace the roof (RCV), and some subtract for age (ACV) or have special roof schedules. Your agent can tell you which you have.
